Solemnly Swear
Dear Diary,
Why do diary entries always begin the same way, with a simple 'dear diary'?. Just like every day begins the same; I'm woken up by my alarm clock ringing on my bedside table and a furious Petunia screaming at me to come down for breakfast. Then, I have to drag myself out of bed and change out of my pyjamas, and take a look in the mirror to make sure I look presentable. Routine. Every summer, always the same. But then, that's why I always look forward to going back to school.
I opened my Hogwarts Letter today. It was the usual letter, with a new list of school books. But, to my surprise, it came with a 'Head Girl' badge. I was shocked. I can't wait to find out who the head boy is, I wonder if they're from Gryffindor. As long as it's not Potter...
At Hogwarts, there's magic around every corner, literally of course. There are essays to write, corridors to patrol, and friends around too. And then there's Potter. How would you describe him? A conceited Quidditch player, so full of himself that you can't have a proper conversation with him without wanting to pull your hair out? Or perhaps, a true romantic who likes you so much he's willing to ask you out time again and time again, even though you still say no every time? No, I don't like James Potter, and I would never go out with him. Ever. But sometimes, if he looks at me with that soulful look in those gorgeous hazel brown eyes, my knees buckle and I can't look at him straight because...
Because... I don't like him. That's all there is to it. So maybe he is tall and handsome and his jet black hair is so adorably messy all the time. That's completely beside the point. He's rude and obnoxious and likes to pick on people weaker than him simply because he can. He's a bully, that's what he is. He always pick on Snape, just because he's a Slytherin, and hexes anybody that happens to be in his way.
And his friends... they never stand up to him. They go along with everything he does, especially Peter Pettigrew. And Sirius Black, the one with all the ideas, he's almost as bad as Potter. Potter and Black lead their little gang and make fun of everyone they can. They end up in detention at least once a week, I'm sure of it. Lupin is the only decent one of the four, at least you can have a sensible conversation with him. But, it's not like he ever tries to stop them either.
At least I can always count on my friends to be there for me. Alice always tries to support me, no matter what I do, unless I'm being stupid. She never hesitates to tell me if I'm being a fool. She's more reserved than I am and has more sense. Sometimes I get so angry I say things I shouldn't. Alice keeps me in check. Emily's the typical blonde, but not for the reasons you may think. She's not stupid at all, but she is very optimistic and all the boys seem to love her. She has this sort of innocence about her, even when you want to hate her you love her because she's so good-natured. Of course, I'm not saying she's an angel. She has moments where she can be a tad emotional. All that happiness must get to a person sometimes.
There goes Petunia again. She's screaming at me to come and get my washing like her leg has just been chopped off and she needs me to call an ambulance. I should stop writing now, I need to ask Mum to take me into Diagon Alley to get my school things this afternoon. I really need to start packing...
Lots of Love,
Lily Evans.
